Origins of Superettan

2000

Superettan is the second tier of the Swedish men's football league system, ranking directly below Allsvenskan. It was created to replace the earlier Division 1 Norra and Södra as the second level, and it is contested by sixteen clubs who play each other home and away. The top two teams are promoted to Allsvenskan, and the third-placed team plays a promotion play-off, while the bottom teams are relegated to Ettan, the third tier. The league is a mixture of clubs with long histories that have fallen from the top flight and ambitious smaller clubs. It also serves as an important place for developing young players and coaches who later move to the top division or to clubs abroad.
