Nupedia was an online encyclopedia whose articles were written by volunteer experts and passed through a long, formal review process before publication. It was started by Jimmy Wales and edited by Larry Sanger, and it was financed by Wales's internet company Bomis. Progress was slow because few articles passed the multi-stage review. To speed up the work, Sanger and Wales set up a companion wiki that anyone could edit, and this project became Wikipedia, which quickly outgrew its parent. Nupedia produced only a small number of finished articles before it was closed down, and its content was later absorbed into Wikipedia.
