Origins of Ligue 2

1933

Ligue 2 is the second tier of professional association football in France, beneath Ligue 1. It originated when professional football was introduced in France in the early 1930s, and the second division was created as part of that system, taking the name Division 2. It was renamed Ligue 2 in the early 2000s. Clubs compete in a league season, with the top teams promoted to Ligue 1 and the bottom teams relegated to the third-tier Championnat National. Many historic French clubs have played in it, and its teams include both former top-flight sides and smaller regional clubs.
