Construction of Lacoste

1933

Lacoste is a French fashion company best known for its polo shirts and for the small green crocodile that serves as its logo. It was founded in the early 1930s by the tennis champion Rene Lacoste together with the knitwear manufacturer Andre Gillier. Lacoste, nicknamed the Crocodile by the press during his playing career, had begun wearing a loose, short-sleeved cotton piqué shirt on court as an alternative to the stiff long-sleeved shirts then customary. The company turned that design into a commercial product, and it became a popular casual garment worldwide. Today Lacoste sells clothing, footwear and accessories in many countries.
