Construction of Heydar Aliyev International Airport

1933

Heydar Aliyev International Airport is the main international airport of Azerbaijan, located east of the capital Baku. It developed from a Soviet-era aviation facility and expanded over the decades as air travel in the Caucasus grew. The airport was named after Heydar Aliyev, the former Soviet official who became president of independent Azerbaijan, after his death in 2003. A new terminal was opened in 2014, with a futuristic design intended to impress visitors arriving in the country. It is the base of the national carrier Azerbaijan Airlines and has been a hub for connections between Europe and Central Asia.
