Construction of Sydney Airport

1933

Sydney Airport, officially Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, is the main international and domestic airport of Sydney and lies in the suburb of Mascot, about eight kilometres south of the city centre. Aircraft began using the site in 1919 and 1920, which makes it one of the oldest continuously operating airports in the world, and it was developed through the 1920s and 1930s as air travel grew. It is named after the Australian aviation pioneer Charles Kingsford Smith. The airport has grown steadily, with runways extending into Botany Bay, and it is the busiest in Australia. It was privatised in 2002, and a second airport for the city is being built at Badgerys Creek.
