Origins of Serie B

1929

Serie B is the second tier of the Italian football league system, below Serie A. Italy's national league structure began in 1929, when the earlier regional competitions were replaced by two nationwide divisions, Serie A and Serie B, each played as a round-robin among clubs. Teams are promoted and relegated between the divisions at the end of each season, and relegation from Serie B goes to the third tier, now called Serie C. Many historic clubs have spent time in Serie B, including Juventus, which was sent down in 2006 after the Calciopoli scandal. The league has been through several changes in its format and the number of teams over the decades.
