Origins of Billie Jean King Cup

1963

The Billie Jean King Cup is the main international team competition in women's tennis, which began in 1963 as the Federation Cup, created by the International Tennis Federation to mark its fiftieth anniversary and to provide a women's counterpart to the Davis Cup. The first event was held in London, and was won by the United States. It was held as a single-week tournament for many years and later converted to a system of home-and-away ties and a final stage. In 1995 the competition was renamed the Fed Cup, and in 2020 it was renamed in honor of Billie Jean King, the American champion who campaigned for equality in tennis. The United States, Czechia and Italy are among its most successful teams.
