Founding of Lamborghini

1963

Lamborghini is an Italian manufacturer of luxury sports cars based in Sant'Agata Bolognese, near Bologna. It was started by Ferruccio Lamborghini, who had made his fortune building tractors and heating and air-conditioning equipment. According to a popular story he turned to cars after being dissatisfied with a Ferrari, though accounts differ. The company's first model was the 350 GT, followed by the Miura of 1966, whose mid-engined layout helped define the supercar. Its cars carry names from bullfighting and a raging bull as emblem, reflecting the founder's zodiac sign, Taurus. Financial difficulties in the 1970s led to a series of ownership changes, including a period under Chrysler, and since 1998 Lamborghini has belonged to Audi and thus to the Volkswagen Group.
