Operation Rising Lion was the name given by Israel to a surprise military attack on Iran, in which Israeli aircraft and other forces struck nuclear facilities, missile sites and military leaders, and killed several senior commanders and nuclear scientists. Israel said that Iran was close to building a nuclear weapon, which Iran denied. Iran responded with waves of missiles and drones aimed at Israeli cities, and the exchange of fire went on for about twelve days. The United States also carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. A ceasefire took effect in late June, and the extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear programme was debated afterwards.
