Construction of Arena AufSchalke

30 May 2001

Arena AufSchalke, officially known for sponsorship reasons as the Veltins-Arena, is a football stadium in Gelsenkirchen in the Ruhr region of Germany and the home of FC Schalke 04. It opened in the summer of 2001, replacing the club's former Parkstadion. The stadium is notable for its retractable roof and a pitch that can be rolled out of the building on a tray to let the grass grow outdoors. It has been used for concerts, ice hockey and biathlon events, and it was a venue for matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The capacity for football is over sixty thousand, with extra standing places for some competitions.
