The Myanmar Civil War is the armed conflict that followed the military coup in Myanmar, in which the armed forces, the Tatmadaw, overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Mass peaceful protests were met with lethal force, and many opponents formed the National Unity Government and armed People's Defence Forces. These groups fought alongside long-established ethnic armed organisations in the borderlands, including the Kachin, Karen, Karenni, Chin and Arakan groups. In late 2023 a coordinated offensive by allied ethnic forces in the north took several towns and border posts from the military. The fighting has displaced millions of people, caused severe humanitarian hardship, and brought international sanctions against the junta.
