The 2021 Taliban offensive was a military campaign that took place as United States and NATO forces completed their withdrawal from Afghanistan, in accordance with an agreement signed in Doha in 2020. The Taliban quickly took control of rural districts, and in August captured provincial capitals one after another, including Kandahar and Herat, often with little resistance from the Afghan army, which had been weakened by the loss of foreign air support and by poor morale. The collapse culminated in the capture of Kabul, after President Ashraf Ghani left the country. The Taliban re-established the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, and a chaotic airlift evacuated thousands of foreign nationals and Afghans.
