Launch of Tiangong space station

29 April 2021

The Tiangong space station is a Chinese space station in low Earth orbit, built and operated by the China Manned Space Agency. Its construction began with the launch of the Tianhe core module on a Long March 5B rocket, followed by the Wentian and Mengtian laboratory modules in 2022, which gave it a T-shaped structure. It is crewed by astronauts, called taikonauts, who arrive on Shenzhou spacecraft and stay for several months at a time, while cargo comes on Tianzhou vehicles. China built its own station after being excluded from the International Space Station, and Tiangong is expected to operate for at least a decade.
