The 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis was an escalation in May 2021, starting with tension in East Jerusalem over the threatened eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and clashes at the Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan. Hamas then fired rockets toward Jerusalem, leading to eleven days of fighting in which Israel carried out airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and militants launched thousands of rockets at Israeli cities. Violence between Arab and Jewish residents also broke out in mixed towns inside Israel. More than two hundred Palestinians, many of them civilians, and about a dozen people in Israel were killed. A ceasefire mediated by Egypt ended the fighting, and reconstruction in Gaza was slow.
