Murder of George Floyd

25 May 2020

George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes while he was handcuffed and lying face down on the street. Floyd had been arrested over a suspected counterfeit banknote. Video recorded by a bystander spread rapidly, prompting protests across the United States and other countries and renewed debate about police violence and racism, with the Black Lives Matter movement at the centre. Chauvin was convicted of murder in 2021 and sentenced to more than two decades in prison. Three other officers were also convicted of federal charges. The case led to calls for police reform and some changes to local policing laws.
