Discovery of Kepler-1649c

15 April 2020

Kepler-1649c is an Earth-sized exoplanet about three hundred light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. It was identified in 2020 in archived data from NASA's Kepler space telescope that had been wrongly rejected as noise by the automated analysis, and was announced by a team led by Andrew Vanderburg. The planet is only slightly larger than Earth and receives about three quarters as much starlight as Earth, so it lies in the habitable zone of its red dwarf star, though flares from the star could affect conditions on it. It orbits in about nineteen days. At the time it was the most Earth-like exoplanet in terms of size and temperature found in Kepler data.
