George Floyd protests

26 May 2020

The George Floyd protests were a wave of demonstrations against police brutality and racism, which began in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after Floyd, a Black man, died when a police officer, Derek Chauvin, knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest. A video of the incident spread widely, and protests soon took place in cities across the United States and in many other countries, drawing millions of people and bringing the Black Lives Matter movement to the forefront. Some demonstrations were marked by looting and clashes with police, leading to curfews and deployments of the National Guard. Chauvin was convicted of murder in 2021, and the protests led to debates about policing, monuments and racial justice.
