Malaysia Airlines Flight 17

17 July 2014

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a scheduled passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board, most of them Dutch citizens. The Boeing 777 was hit by a missile from a Buk system while flying over territory held by pro-Russian separatists during the war in the Donbas. The Dutch Safety Board concluded that it was destroyed by a warhead of this type, and an international Joint Investigation Team traced the missile launcher to a Russian military unit. In 2022 a Dutch court convicted three men in absentia for their role in the shooting down. Russia has denied any involvement.
