The 2014 Gaza War was a military conflict between Israel and Hamas and other armed groups in the Gaza Strip. It followed the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank and the murder of a Palestinian teenager in retaliation, and rising rocket fire from Gaza. Israel launched an air campaign, called Operation Protective Edge, followed by a ground operation aimed at destroying rocket launchers and the tunnels that crossed into Israel. Many more Palestinians than Israelis were killed, and according to the United Nations most of the Palestinian dead were civilians, a figure Israel disputes. Large parts of Gaza were damaged, and an open-ended ceasefire was reached through Egyptian mediation.
