Liberation of Paris

from 19 August 1944 to 25 August 1944

The Liberation of Paris freed the city from German occupation in the summer of 1944, a few weeks after the Allied landings in Normandy. It began with an uprising by the French Resistance and the police, and as street fighting spread, the Free French 2nd Armoured Division under General Leclerc, along with American troops, was sent into the city. The German commander, General Dietrich von Choltitz, surrendered on 25 August, and did not carry out Hitler's order to destroy the city, so that Paris was largely spared. General Charles de Gaulle arrived and led a march down the Champs-Elysees the next day, and he installed his provisional government.
