Operation Dragoon, originally planned under the code name Anvil, was the Allied landing on the Mediterranean coast of southern France between Toulon and Cannes. American troops of the US Seventh Army under Alexander Patch, together with French forces commanded by Jean de Lattre de Tassigny and supported by airborne units and a large naval force, went ashore. The German Army Group G, weakened by transfers to Normandy, had to retreat up the Rhône valley, and Marseille and Toulon were liberated by French troops within days. The Allies advanced north quickly and joined forces with those from Normandy near Dijon in September. The operation opened major ports for supplies, but the Germans' escape left some debate over whether it should have been done differently.
