The Slovak National Uprising was an armed rebellion against the pro-German government of Slovakia, led by Jozef Tiso, and against the German occupation. It was organized by a coalition of officers of the Slovak army and the resistance, which included both communists and democrats, and was centered on Banská Bystrica in central Slovakia. When German troops moved into Slovakia, the insurgents rose, and held a large area for some weeks, but they were short of weapons and Soviet help arrived too late. The Germans, with Slovak collaborators, crushed the revolt and then took bitter revenge, with executions and massacres, as at Kremnička and Nemecká. Partisans continued guerrilla warfare until the arrival of the Red Army.
