Liao dynasty

from 916 CE to 1125

The Liao dynasty was an empire established by the Khitan people, nomadic pastoralists from the eastern steppes, after their leader Abaoji united the tribes and proclaimed himself emperor. It controlled Mongolia, Manchuria and a part of northern China including the Sixteen Prefectures, which it was given by one of the successor states to the Tang. The Liao used a dual system of administration, with a Khitan system for the nomads and a Chinese-style one for the farming regions. The Khitans devised two scripts of their own. The dynasty fought the Song, and a peace treaty in 1005 had the Song pay yearly tribute. The Jurchens overthrew it, though a branch survived in Central Asia as the Kara Khitai.
