The Kingdom of England emerged in the 10th century when the kings of Wessex, notably Æthelstan, brought the Anglo-Saxon and Danish-ruled territories under a single crown. It was conquered by William of Normandy in 1066, which brought a new ruling class and the French language into the royal court. Medieval England saw the signing of Magna Carta in 1215, the growth of Parliament, long wars with France and the civil wars of the Roses. After the English Civil War the monarchy was abolished for eleven years and was restored in 1660. The kingdom ceased to exist in 1707, when the Acts of Union joined it with Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain.
