Goryeo

from 918 CE to 1392

Goryeo was the kingdom that ruled the Korean peninsula for almost five centuries and gave the country its Western name, Korea. It was founded by Wang Geon, known after death as Taejo, a military leader from the Songak region who reunited the peninsula after the era of the Later Three Kingdoms. The capital was Kaesong, in what is now North Korea. Buddhism flourished under the dynasty, producing the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks and celebrated celadon pottery, and Goryeo printers made some of the earliest books printed with movable metal type. From the thirteenth century the kingdom suffered Mongol invasions and then served as a vassal of the Yuan dynasty. It ended when General Yi Seong-gye seized power and founded the Joseon dynasty.
