The Kingdom of Leon was a medieval Christian kingdom in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, which took shape when King Garcia I moved the court of the Kingdom of Asturias to the city of Leon, the new capital. It continued the Asturian monarchy and expanded south against the Muslim states. In 1188, Alfonso IX held a gathering in Leon that included representatives of the towns as well as nobles and clergy, regarded as one of the earliest parliaments in Europe, and UNESCO has recognised the Leonese Cortes of 1188 as a document of democracy. Leon was joined to Castile permanently under Ferdinand III in 1230, though it kept its own institutions, and its title survived in the Spanish monarchy for centuries.
