Cluny Abbey was founded in Burgundy by William I, Duke of Aquitaine, who gave the land and placed the monastery directly under the authority of the pope rather than under local bishops or nobles. Its first abbot, Berno, followed the Rule of Saint Benedict, and Cluny soon became the head of a reform movement that spread to hundreds of dependent houses across Europe. Under abbots such as Odilo and Hugh, it grew very wealthy and powerful, and its third church, Cluny III, was for centuries the largest church in Christendom. The abbey was sacked in the French Revolution and mostly demolished, leaving only fragments.
