Launch of Threads

5 July 2023

Threads is a text-based social networking service created by Meta Platforms as a companion to Instagram, and users can sign in with their Instagram accounts and carry over their followers. It opened in dozens of countries at once, at a time when many Twitter users were unhappy with changes made by its new owner, Elon Musk. Threads attracted tens of millions of sign-ups within the first days, though activity dropped sharply in the following weeks. It was held back in the European Union at first because of regulatory concerns over data use, and arrived there later in the year. Meta later began to connect the service to the fediverse, the network of servers that communicate through the ActivityPub protocol.
