The Wagner Group rebellion was a short armed uprising in Russia on 23 and 24 June 2023, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary company, which had fought for Russia in Ukraine. Prigozhin, who had been feuding publicly with the Russian defense leadership, accused the military of attacking his forces and ordered his men to march on the military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, which they took without much resistance. A column then advanced toward Moscow, and Wagner forces shot down several military aircraft. The march was halted after a deal brokered by Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, under which Prigozhin was to go to Belarus and charges were dropped. Two months later, in August 2023, Prigozhin died in a plane crash north of Moscow.
