Discovery of Styx

26 June 2012

Styx is a small moon of the dwarf planet Pluto and is the smallest known one, with an irregular shape and a diameter of only a few kilometers. It was discovered on 26 June 2012 by a team led by Mark Showalter, using the Hubble Space Telescope while looking for hazards for the New Horizons spacecraft, which was heading to the Pluto system. It became the fifth known moon of Pluto, after Charon, Nix, Hydra and Kerberos. Its name, approved in 2013, refers to the river Styx in Greek mythology, which the dead had to cross to enter the underworld. New Horizons imaged it in 2015 during its flyby.
