Discovery of TOI-700 d

September 2020

TOI-700 d is an exoplanet orbiting the red dwarf TOI-700, a cool star about 100 light-years away in the southern constellation Dorado. It was found by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, TESS, and became one of its first Earth-sized planets in the habitable zone of its star. The planet is slightly larger than Earth and completes an orbit in roughly 37 days. Its star hosts at least two other planets, and later observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope helped confirm the discovery. Climate models suggest that it could have a range of conditions, depending on its atmosphere. Because it is so close to its star, it is probably tidally locked, always showing the same face to it.
