Second Nagorno-Karabakh War

from 27 September 2020 to 10 November 2020

The war was fought between Azerbaijan and the Armenian-backed forces of the self-declared Republic of Artsakh over Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts, which Armenian forces had held since the first war of the early 1990s. Azerbaijan, supported by Turkey and making heavy use of drones and long-range artillery, gradually broke through the defenses and took the strategic town of Shusha in early November. A ceasefire brokered by Russia ended the fighting: Armenia handed over the districts around the enclave, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the Lachin corridor. Thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed, and in September 2023 Azerbaijan retook the rest of the territory, after which nearly all of its ethnic Armenian population left.
