Launch of Mars Orbiter Mission

5 November 2013

The Mars Orbiter Mission, also known as Mangalyaan, was India's first interplanetary mission, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation on a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. The spacecraft entered orbit around Mars in September 2014, making India the first Asian country to reach Mars and the first country in the world to do so on its first attempt. The mission was notable for its low cost, which was much lower than that of comparable missions of other space agencies. It carried instruments to study the Martian surface and atmosphere, including a sensor to look for methane. It operated far longer than its planned six months, and contact was lost in 2022.
