Euromaidan

from 21 November 2013 to 23 February 2014

Euromaidan was a wave of protests in Ukraine that began in November 2013, when President Viktor Yanukovych suddenly suspended the signing of an association agreement with the European Union under Russian pressure. Crowds gathered in Independence Square, the Maidan, in Kyiv, and the movement widened into a demand for political change and an end to corruption, especially after riot police violently dispersed demonstrators. In February 2014 clashes in the center of Kyiv left dozens dead, among them protesters and police officers. Yanukovych fled the capital and parliament removed him, and an interim government signed the association agreement. The upheaval was followed by Russia's annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war in eastern Ukraine.
