Launch of MAVEN

18 November 2013

MAVEN, short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, is a NASA orbiter launched on an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral. It reached Mars in September 2014 and began studying the planet's upper atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. Its measurements showed that Mars has lost much of its atmosphere to space over billions of years, stripped away by the solar wind and radiation after the planet lost its global magnetic field. This helps to explain how Mars changed from a world that may once have had liquid water on the surface to a cold and dry one. The mission also serves as a communications relay for the rovers on the surface.
