Premiere of Neon Genesis Evangelion

from 4 October 1995 to 27 March 1996

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a Japanese anime television series created by Hideaki Anno and produced by the studio Gainax, broadcast on TV Tokyo in 26 episodes from late 1995 to early 1996. It follows Shinji Ikari, a teenager who is recruited by his father to pilot a giant bio-mechanical machine called an Evangelion, in order to fight monstrous beings called Angels that threaten the future of humanity. Behind the action, the series explores themes of loneliness, trauma and depression, and its final episodes shift to the characters' inner lives, which provoked strong reactions. The film The End of Evangelion in 1997 offered an alternative ending. The show reshaped the genre of mecha anime and led to a franchise that includes films and merchandise.
