Construction of The Shard

5 July 2012

The Shard is a skyscraper in London beside London Bridge station, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and officially inaugurated in July 2012. Its pyramid-like glass form, rising to about 310 meters, made it the tallest building in the European Union at the time of its completion. It holds offices, restaurants, a hotel, apartments and a public viewing gallery near the top. The project was developed by Irvine Sellar with Qatari investors. Its construction on the south bank of the Thames drew both admiration and criticism for the way it changed the skyline of the historic city.
