Hurricane Irene

from 21 August 2011 to 4 September 2011

Hurricane Irene was a large Atlantic hurricane of the 2011 season, which reached category 3 intensity over the Bahamas before weakening as it moved north. It struck the coast of North Carolina in late August as a category 1 hurricane and then moved up the eastern seaboard of the United States, reaching the New York area as a tropical storm. Authorities ordered the first mandatory evacuation of low-lying parts of New York City and shut down the subway system, although the city escaped the worst. The most damaging effects came from inland flooding, especially in Vermont and upstate New York, where rivers overflowed and washed out roads and bridges. Dozens of people died and the storm caused billions of dollars in damage.
