Occupy Wall Street

17 September 2011

Occupy Wall Street was a protest movement that began with an occupation of Zuccotti Park in the financial district of New York City, after a call by the Canadian magazine Adbusters. Its participants protested against economic inequality, the influence of banks and corporations in politics, and the lack of accountability after the financial crisis, summing up their position in the slogan We are the 99 percent, a reference to the concentration of wealth among the richest one percent. It spread to cities across the United States and around the world, and its general assemblies tried to decide matters by consensus. Police cleared the encampment two months later, but the movement influenced political debates about inequality.
