Founding of BBC News

14 November 1922

BBC News is the news division of the British Broadcasting Corporation, and one of the largest broadcast news organizations in the world. Its origins lie in the first radio news bulletins read from the BBC's London station in its earliest weeks, when newspapers pressed the broadcaster to limit its reporting. The BBC at first depended on news agencies, and only gradually built up its own correspondents. Television news began in the 1950s, and the 24-hour BBC News channel started in the late 1990s. Today the division provides radio, television and online services, including the BBC World Service, and its reputation for independence has often been tested by political pressure.
