Satyajit Ray was born on 2 May 1921 in Kolkata. An Indian filmmaker and writer from Calcutta, Ray is regarded as the finest director in the history of Indian cinema. His debut, Pather Panchali (1955), and its sequels Aparajito and The World of Apu formed the Apu Trilogy, a gentle, humane portrait of a Bengali boy growing up, which won prizes at Cannes and Venice. Other notable films include The Music Room, Charulata and Days and Nights in the Forest. He also composed his own scores, designed posters and wrote popular children's stories, including the Feluda detective tales. He received an honorary Academy Award shortly before his death and India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
