Ban Ki-moon was born on 13 June 1944 in Eumseong County. A South Korean diplomat, Ban served as foreign minister of his country before becoming the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations, a post he held from 2007 to 2016. He made climate change a priority of his tenure, helping to bring about the Paris Agreement of 2015, and he oversaw the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals. His time in office was also marked by criticism over the response to the war in Syria and by the UN's role in a cholera outbreak in Haiti. After leaving office he chaired the Global Center on Adaptation and joined The Elders, a group of independent global leaders.
