Operation Bagration was a massive Soviet offensive in the summer of 1944, aimed at destroying the German Army Group Centre in Belarus and eastern Poland. It was launched on the third anniversary of Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union, and it was coordinated with the Allied landings in Normandy, which ensured that Germany could not move reserves between fronts. The Red Army, using its superiority in men, tanks and aircraft, broke through the German lines in several places, surrounded large formations and liberated Minsk. In a few weeks it advanced hundreds of kilometres to the Vistula River, close to Warsaw. The German army lost a very large part of its strength in the East, and the operation is regarded as one of the greatest defeats in its history.
