Wikimedia Commons is an online repository of freely licensed or public-domain images, audio recordings, video and other media files, run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It was launched to provide a shared central library for the various Wikipedia language editions and other sister projects, so that a photograph or recording uploaded once could be used in every language. Its volunteer editors organise material into categories and check licences, and anyone can reuse files subject to their terms. Commons has grown into a vast collection used in Wikipedia articles, books and educational materials, and it has also hosted large donations from museums, libraries and archives.
