Wikispecies is a free, collaboratively edited online directory of living and fossil species, run by the Wikimedia Foundation as a sister project of Wikipedia. It aims to provide a structured catalogue of the tree of life, listing the classification of each organism, along with its scientific name, authorities and links to the literature in which it was described. It is meant to be used mainly by scientists, in contrast to Wikipedia, which is written for the general public. The site uses the same MediaWiki software as Wikipedia and is available in several languages, although it is edited in English. Its taxonomic data are connected with those in Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
