Discovery of Mu Arae c

25 August 2004

Mu Arae c, also known as HD 160691 c, is a planet orbiting a sun-like star in the constellation Ara, roughly fifty light-years away. It was announced in 2004 by a team led by Nuno Santos using the HARPS spectrograph at the European Southern Observatory in Chile. With a mass of about fourteen times that of the Earth and an orbit of around ten days, it was one of the first known planets of the intermediate size between rocky worlds and giants, similar to Neptune. Its discovery showed that such planets existed close to their stars. The system has since been found to have at least four planets.
