Founding of University of Oslo

2 September 1811

The University of Oslo was founded as the Royal Frederick University by King Frederick VI of Denmark-Norway, who wanted to give Norway a university of its own. Until then, Norwegians who wanted a higher education had to travel to Copenhagen. Teaching began a couple of years afterwards in the capital, then called Christiania. After the events of 1814, when Norway entered a union with Sweden, the university became an important institution of the new Norwegian state, and a centre of national culture. It took its present name in 1939. The university has produced many leading Norwegian scientists, writers and politicians.
