Publication of Hansel and Gretel

1812

Hansel and Gretel is a German fairy tale about a brother and sister abandoned in a forest by their parents during a famine. They find a house made of bread and sweets, which belongs to a witch who traps Hansel, intending to fatten and eat him. Gretel tricks the witch and pushes her into the oven, and the children escape with treasure to return home. The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, included the tale in the first volume of their collection of folk stories, Children's and Household Tales. Engelbert Humperdinck turned it into an opera in 1893, and the tale has inspired many films and retellings.
