Founding of Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia

29 July 2005

The Federal University of Recôncavo of Bahia was created by federal law in 2005, when the former agricultural school at Cruz das Almas, which had been part of the Federal University of Bahia, was turned into an independent university. Its main campus is in Cruz das Almas, in the Recôncavo region around Salvador's Bay of All Saints. Over the years it expanded to other towns of the region, including Cachoeira, Santo Antônio de Jesus, Amargosa and Feira de Santana. The creation of the university formed part of a national policy in the 2000s to extend public federal higher education to the interior of Brazil. Agriculture and the environment remain central to its identity, alongside humanities and health.
